GTM engineer
A GTM engineer is the person who builds the systems a sales team runs on: the lists, the enrichment, the scoring, the sending and the links between tools, wired together with APIs, webhooks and AI so outbound runs without copy and paste.
What a GTM engineer does
The title is new and the job description still varies from company to company. The role sits between sales operations and engineering: the person who turns a go-to-market plan into a system that runs every day without anyone exporting a CSV.
- Lists. Pulls the companies and people that match the ideal customer profile from searches, data vendors and the CRM, and keeps duplicates out.
- Enrichment. Fills the gaps: work emails, phone numbers, company size, the tools a company runs. A common pattern is a waterfall, where one provider after another is asked until one returns an answer that passes verification.
- Scoring. Decides who is worth a message, often with an AI prompt that reads each row and explains its answer.
- Sending. Sets up the sequences, the mailboxes and the sending domains, and keeps them healthy.
- Plumbing. Connects the tools with APIs and webhooks, so a reply, a booked meeting or a closed deal updates everything else.
Skills the role asks for
The role asks for breadth: enough code to make tools talk to each other, and enough sales sense to know what the team needs from them.
- Data. Joins, deduplication, formulas, and a feel for when a field is wrong.
- APIs. Reading API docs, sending a request with the right headers, and handling a timeout or a rate limit.
- Prompts. Writing an AI instruction that answers the same way on the thousandth row as on the first, and testing it on a sample before it runs on the whole table.
- Email setup. Gmail requires anyone who sends to Gmail accounts to authenticate their sending domains with SPF or DKIM, and anyone who sends more than 5,000 messages a day there to set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC.1
- Data protection. A named work email is personal data. The UK regulator says the UK GDPR applies when you collect someone's business contact details to market to them, so you need a lawful basis and you must tell them.2
GTM engineering in GetSales
The work happens in tables and workflows. Find work email asks finder after finder in the order you set. Pick a verifier and each address is checked before it lands. Call your own endpoint from a column or a workflow step, and bring rows in by webhook, from any tool. Each AI answer keeps its reasoning, so you can see why a row scored the way it did.
