Waterfall enrichment, in the order you set.

One finder after another, in your order. Pick a verifier and the chain stops at the first email that passes the check.

Sample of the waterfall of a Find work email column in GetSales: the row's own address first, then finder 1 and finder 2, in the order you drag them, and the verifier that checks every address a step returns, with catch-all emails accepted.

How it works

From the first finder
to a valid email

Set once in the Find work email column, it runs on every row, in the order of its Waterfall sequence.

  1. Set the order

A new column lists the row's own address first, then the finders. Drag them into any order, or remove a step. Each finder appears once.

  2. One finder at a time

A finder runs only when every step before it ended without an accepted address. A finder with nothing to read on the row is skipped.

  3. A verdict at each step

Pick a verifier and every address a step returns is checked. Valid or catch-all stops the chain. Invalid or unknown is rejected, and the next finder runs.

  4. The chain stops

The first accepted address is written, and the finders after it never run. When none is accepted, the cell says why: Not verified, or Nothing found.

In the table

Each email shows
where it stopped

Under each address, the finder that found it, or every finder asked. The cell's Log keeps every step, with what it returned and its verdict.

  • Found by finder 1: the chain stopped at its first finder
  • Found by finder 2: the first came back empty or rejected
  • Tried finder 1, finder 2: every finder asked, nothing found

What it costs

The credit waits
for the verdict

With a verifier, a finder's credit is held while its address is checked, then taken only for the address that is accepted. Every other hold is released.

What a credit costs

1 credit

0
A finder that finds nothing, or is skipped

What is waterfall enrichment?

Waterfall enrichment, or waterfall data enrichment, asks one finder after another for the same fact, in a set order, and stops at the first answer that is accepted. In GetSales it is how the Find work email column works: the row's own address first, then the finders in the order you set, and with a verifier picked, every address checked before it is accepted.

How does waterfall enrichment work?

The Find work email column asks one finder at a time, in the order of its Waterfall sequence. Every address a finder returns goes to the verifier you picked. A valid address is accepted and the chain stops. An invalid or unknown one is rejected and the next finder runs. A finder with nothing to read on the row is skipped. Without a verifier, the first address found is accepted.

Can waterfall enrichment fill incomplete lead records?

Yes, that is what waterfall lead enrichment is for. The first step is the row's own address, so a record that already has one is answered by it and no finder runs. With a verifier, that address is checked first, unless the person is already marked deliverable. Only a row with no address, or one whose address fails the check, goes on to the finders, and a verified find then replaces the rejected address.

Can I change the order of the finders?

Yes. Drag the steps of the Waterfall sequence into any order. Move the row's own address to the end to search first and fall back to it, or remove it to always search. Each finder can be in the sequence once.

Does a waterfall find more emails than one finder?

It gives each row more than one try. Where the first finder finds nothing, or its address fails the check, the next one in your order searches, and only the address that is accepted is charged. How many more it finds depends on the list. The cell's Log shows where each row's chain stopped.

What does waterfall enrichment cost?

One credit per address accepted and delivered, its check included. A finder that finds nothing costs nothing, an address the verifier rejects costs nothing, and the finders after the chain stops never run. When a verifier checks the row's own address, that check costs the verifier's rate. What a credit costs is on the pricing page.

What happens with a catch-all address?

A catch-all domain accepts any address, so a message to it may bounce. When the verifier reports a catch-all and Accept catch-all emails is on, the default, the chain stops there and the cell is marked Catch-all, never Verified. Switch it off and a catch-all is rejected like an invalid address, and the next finder runs.

What happens when no finder finds an email?

The cell says why, and nothing is charged. Not verified means addresses were found and the verifier rejected every one. Nothing found means no finder returned an address. If the verifier itself could not answer, the cell names that instead. The cell's Log lists every step with what it returned and its verdict.

What are the best waterfall enrichment tools?

Look for waterfall enrichment tools with an order you control, a check of every address before it is accepted, and a charge only for what is delivered. A waterfall that pays each finder on every row, or writes an address nobody checked, costs more for the same list. In GetSales, the Find work email column with a verifier picked works this way.

Every chain run

Seven valid emails, found in your order.

Each came from the first finder whose address passed the check. For the eighth person, every finder was asked.

Your order. A verdict at every step.
