Firmographic data
Firmographic data is the set of facts that describe a company: its industry, size, location, ownership and age. Sales teams use it to define the companies they sell to, split a list into segments and send each account to the right rep.
What firmographic data covers
Firmographics come from company registers, a company's own site and data providers who combine the two. The usual fields:
- Industry. What the company does, as a plain label or as a code from an official classification.
- Size. Headcount, usually as a band such as 51-200, revenue where it is published, and how fast headcount is changing.
- Location. The headquarters, the other offices and the countries the company sells in.
- Ownership and age. Public or private, a parent or a subsidiary, the year it was founded and the funding it has raised.
Size bands deserve a second look. The EU counts a company as small with fewer than 50 staff and turnover or a balance sheet total of up to €10 million, and as medium with fewer than 250 staff and turnover up to €50 million or a balance sheet total up to €43 million.1 A provider's 201-500 band holds medium and large companies under that definition, so check how the bands are cut before you filter on them.
How sales teams use it
- The ideal customer profile. Industry, size and region turn "companies like our best customers" into a filter you can build a list from.
- Segments. A 40-person agency and a 4,000-person bank need different messages, and firmographics split the list so each gets its own.
- Routing. Region and size decide which rep or which sequence an account goes to.
Is firmographic data personal data?
Mostly not. The GDPR does not cover data about legal persons, including a company's name, its legal form and its contact details.2 Once a row pairs a company's size with a named buyer, though, it holds personal data about that buyer, and the GDPR applies to that part of it.
How to add it to a list
In GetSales, Enrich company adds a company's industry and size to the Companies tab of a table, each data point as its own column. Industry and size come with the Advanced level. Any company column can also sit beside each person, added from their Company cell.
